The 2026 World Ocean Week in Xiamen will run from Nov 5 to 11, under the theme of "Safeguard the Deep Blue Together, Foster Human-Ocean Harmony". The event will feature 33 activities, including an opening ceremony, nine cultural exchange programs, 19 scientific and ecological sessions, and four marine economy matchmaking events.
It aims to merge ecological protection, technological innovation, industrial development, and cultural exchange into a global platform that drives local growth and benefits residents.
The opening ceremony on Nov 5 will bring together officials, researchers, and representatives of international bodies including the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and the World Economic Forum.
Participants will discuss deep-sea governance and marine biodiversity, with several reports to be released. These will include one on digital habitats of typical seamounts and an APEC ocean literacy action plan.
Sessions will address issues such as the science and governance of marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction, capacity building, China-ASEAN marine governance, and sustainable ocean development, drawing on multilateral frameworks including APEC and BRICS.
A separate exhibition will highlight China's role in global ocean governance and Xiamen's marine practices. Youth activities will take place at the Xiamen Youth Palace on Nov 7 and 8, while a photography exhibition and public open days at universities and research institutes will also be held during the event.
The event will include trade shows covering marine technology and equipment, seafood, yachts, and health products, alongside a China-Europe blue development investment seminar aimed at linking technology, capital and industry.
As part of the event, the legendary research schooner Tara visited Xiamen from Oct 24 to 28. Looking ahead, a major public highlight will be a full-scale simulator of China's Jiaolong manned submersible — which reached 7,062 meters in the Mariana Trench in 2012. Visitors can enter the simulated cabin to experience a deep-sea mission from Nov 5 to 15.
