Between blue skies and the sea, a new hub for sci-tech innovation is rising along Xiamen's eastern coast. Since its launch in January 2025, Fujian Ocean Innovation Center (Fujian-OI) has been bringing deep-sea research out of the lab and onto the production line.
A shipboard nutrient analyzer now monitors ocean health in real time, measuring seawater instantly without lab samples. It provides data for red tide warnings and aquaculture.
The technology was developed by Ma Jian's team at the Fujian-OI over the course of 17 years. For a long time, it remained a costly lab tool with no clear path to market. With the center's support, the team partnered with Xiamen Standards, a specialized tech company, to launch China's first commercial analyzer in 2025.
The Fujian-OI was built to bridge that gap — turning prototypes into products, aligning research with market needs, and letting industry feedback guide future development.
At the Xiamen Marine High-Tech Industrial Park, Fujian-OI's new 120,000-square-meter campus is taking shape. The center integrates research, pilot testing, and incubation, focusing on monitoring systems, seed stock, bioproducts, and offshore equipment.
In just over a year, it has delivered over 20 breakthroughs, including deep-sea bioproducts, and set China's first local standard for blue carbon accounting. It has also attracted industry leaders like Hengtong Group and China Petrochemical, with one firm registering in a month. The center has partnered with over 100 companies, has nearly 40 formal agreements, and features a growing pipeline of innovations heading to market.
