In recent years, Fujian has advanced ecological protection and restoration efforts. Fuzhou Binhai New City serves as a prime example. Through beach improvement, shelterbelt restoration, and wetland recovery, the area has built a 5.5 kilometers coastal forest belt, restored 3.2 km of backshore dune vegetation, and recovered 274.9 hectares of wetlands.
This restoration model was featured in the 2023 Global Coastal Forum's international case collection and was recognized in 2025 as a key project under the "Ocean Decade" China Action International Cooperation Seed Fund.
Fujian is using technology to protect its marine life. Xiamen has built a digital protection network for Chinese white dolphins using 5G-A and AI, expanding monitoring coverage from 120 to 330 square kilometers. Since its launch in 2024, wildlife distribution has increased by 60 percent, and rare species have grown significantly in both variety and number.
In July 2025, the project won the "AI for Good Global Outstanding Case Award" from the International Telecommunication Union — the first autonomous network innovation in the world to receive this honor.
Dongshan Island is home to the northernmost reef-building coral community along China's mainland coast. Xiamen University and Huawei's TECH4ALL team developed an AI-powered system that identifies corals and fish from underwater video in real time and builds a species database. This shift from manual to AI monitoring offers a replicable, scalable model for marine conservation in China and beyond.
In June 2025, Minjiang Estuary Carbon and Nitrogen Flux Intelligent Monitoring System began a pilot trial in Fuzhou. It is China's first unattended, automated real-time monitoring system for tracking carbon and nitrogen movement in an estuary. The system has the potential to be applied worldwide, supporting marine carbon accounting, nitrogen pollution control, and policy-making on ecosystem compensation.
World Ocean Week in Xiamen has become an annual global gathering for international exchanges on marine policy, science and technology, decision-making, and action. Over the past 20 years, it has attracted officials and experts from more than 130 countries and regions, as well as over 50 major international organizations.
